Report: Manchester United players upset by club's treatment of Romero

Manchester United players are disappointed with the way the club is treating goalkeeper Sergio Romero, sources told Rob Dawson of ESPN.

The 33-year-old netminder, widely viewed as one of the best backups in the Premier League, has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford in the wake of Dean Henderson's return from his loan spell.

Romero was aware that playing time would be scarce this season and wanted a move away during the summer transfer window, but any potential deals were scuppered by the club's £10-million asking price, Dawson reports.

Everton were reportedly interested in the shot-stopper, but they were ultimately put off by the valuation and ended up opting for a more cost-effective option in the form of Robin Olsen to put pressure on incumbent No. 1 Jordan Pickford.

Romero, a popular member of the Red Devils squad after five years at the club, was omitted from the team's Champions League list by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, which prompted players to express their support for the goalkeeper and displeasure over what they deem to be unfair treatment.

His wife, Eliana Guercio, called out the club on Instagram when it became clear a deadline-day move would not materialize.

"Sergio Romero worked hard for this club. Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him," she wrote. "He helped the team reach four finals/semifinals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all. It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. Respect for once!!!"

Romero has made 61 appearances for United since arriving in 2015. He has one year remaining on his contract, though the club has the option to trigger a one-year extension.
