Manchester United suffered their joint-worst defeat in the Premier League era as Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men 6-1 on Sunday.

The defeat was also one of United's most lopsided losses ever at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring with a penalty in the opening minutes but United found themselves trailing 2-1 after seven minutes following goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Heung-Min Son.

It went from bad to worse for the hosts, who were reduced to 10 men just before the half-hour mark when Anthony Martial was sent off for a cynical foul on Erik Lamela.

Spurs needed just seven minutes after Martial's dismissal to put the match out of reach.

Eric Bailly's sloppy play at the back resulted in Harry Kane scoring from close range before Son scored in the 37th minute to give Spurs a 4-1 lead heading into the break.

Spurs continued to press in the second half, with Serge Aurier scoring in the 51st minute before Kane added a penalty for his second goal of the contest.

Tottenham were awarded the penalty when Ben Davies was brought down by Paul Pogba with less than 15 minutes to play.

United's similarly lopsided home defeat came when they were beaten 6-1 by Manchester City in 2011. That was their worst loss at home since 1955.

It's the first time Manchester United have opened a Premier League season by losing their first two home games.
