Liverpool won't be remembered as Premier League champions because the coronavirus pandemic has robbed the season of its integrity, Watford captain Troy Deeney told CNN on Wednesday.

Deeney said the Reds - who currently hold a 25-point lead with nine matches to go - won't get the coronation they deserve.

"... No matter how it plays out, even if we play all the games, it's still going to be the year spoiled by the pandemic," Deeney said. "It's not going to be that year that Liverpool won the league being the best team and, you know, it's 30 years they haven't won for."

Deeney decided not to return to training last week over fears he could pass the coronavirus to his five-month-old son. The 31-year-old subsequently revealed he's been abused online and in public since taking a stand against the league's return-to-play protocol.

"I saw some comments in regards to my son, people saying: 'I hope your son gets corona(virus),'" Deeney added. "That's the hard part for me. If you respond to that, people then go, 'Ah, we've got him,' and they keep doing it."

The Premier League has yet to identify an official date for the season restart.

Four more players and staff tested positive for the coronavirus after the third round of testing.
