Dries Mertens has agreed to a new three-year contract with Napoli, Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian reports.

Mertens was set to become a free agent this summer. Chelsea and Inter Milan were said to be interested in signing the 33-year-old forward upon the expiration of his existing Napoli deal.

Inter had offered Mertens a three-year contract worth £170,000 per week, Romano notes. He'll earn slightly less in Naples - £140,000 per week - but will be given a £2.2-million signing bonus when he officially inks the new terms.

The Belgian, who joined the club from PSV Eindhoven in 2013, has scored 90 goals in 226 league matches with the Italian side.

Prior to the shutdown of both the Serie A and Champions League seasons, Mertens had recorded 12 tallies between the two competitions.

Serie A is hoping to return in mid-June. Clubs voted last week to resume play behind closed doors on June 13, but the Italian government has since announced that all sporting events in the country are suspended until June 14.
