Manchester City will need to mount a serious charge if they want to retain the Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola's side suffered a shock 2-0 loss at home against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, leaving the reigning champions eight points adrift of Liverpool for top spot after as many matches.

Threatening for the entirety of the contest, Wolves finally capitalized on the counter in the 80th minute when Raul Jimenez teed up unlikely scorer Adama Traore. The Mexican left Nicolas Otamendi in his wake before sliding the ball over to the Spaniard, who calmly slotted it home.

With City pushing for an equalizer in added time, Traore completed his brace in the 94th minute, cementing a win that Wolves and Liverpool supporters surely celebrated in equal measure.

Not for the first time this season, City looked sluggish going forward and vulnerable in defense. Despite some standout results early in the campaign - highlighted by an 8-0 obliteration of Watford - Guardiola's team simply hasn't looked like the indestructible unit of recent seasons.

"We were not at our best," Guardiola said after the match. "It was a bad day."

The loss is City's second in just eight league encounters this year; they only dropped four matches last season en route to claiming 98 points.

City fans can take solace in the fact their side overturned a larger deficit last season; Guardiola and Co. trailed Liverpool by 10 points in the table before ultimately roaring back to lift the title again.
