Liverpool on verge of history as last-second penalty keeps streak alive

Brendan Rodgers and Leicester City came this close to ending Liverpool's perfect start to the Premier League season.

After winning their opening seven matches of the campaign, the Reds were seconds away from dropping points against their former manager on Saturday, only for James Milner to come to the rescue in the 95th minute.

Level at one apiece after a late James Maddison strike, Liverpool were awarded a last-gasp penalty for a foul on Sadio Mane, who had opened the scoring in the first half. Milner promptly stepped up and, as he so often does from the spot, calmly slotted the ball home.

The final whistle sounded moments later, to rapturous applause from the home crowd.

The result sees Jurgen Klopp's side extend their Premier League winning streak to 17 matches, going back to last season. Another victory in their next match, against Manchester United, no less, would see Klopp and Co. equal Manchester City's league record for consecutive wins.

Though Rodgers and the Foxes may feel aggrieved by the manner of the defeat, Maddison's goal accounting for their only shot on target highlights how impressive - once again - the hosts were throughout the affair.

Liverpool now hold an eight-point advantage over title rivals City, who will look to cut into that lead once more when they tangle with Wolverhampton on Sunday.
