Report: Spurs join United in race to sign Sporting's Bruno Fernandes

The pursuit of Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes seems to be heating up.

Despite persistent links with a move to Manchester United, Fernandes is now also being courted by Tottenham, who have sent officials to Lisbon in an attempt to set up a deal, Matt Law of The Telegraph reports.

It's understood that Tottenham are still tracking Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, but, according to Law, the Spanish side's refusal to sell the 23-year-old for less than £68 million has brought talks to a halt.

Betis' asking price has resulted in Tottenham turning their attention Fernandes, whom the Premier League side hopes to sign for £55 million, Law adds.

Although such a bid would come close to matching a club record for Tottenham, it falls short of Sporting's £70-million valuation for the Portugal international.

Reports linking the 24-year-old to the Red Devils have cooled off since the club was reportedly preparing to launch a £50-million bid in mid-July. But Tottenham's apparent interest could lead to United renewing their efforts.

Tottenham have only added Tanguy Ndombele, who joined Spurs from Lyon for a club-record €60 million. They will have to work quickly to complete a deal for Fernandes, as the transfer window in England closes on Aug. 8.
