Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is set to miss the Europa League final later this month as he will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, the club announced.

The 23-year-old suffered the injury in the second half of Wednesday's charity match against the New England Revolution in Boston.

A timeline for his return is unknown, but players who've suffered similar injuries have been sidelined for approximately six months.

Losing Loftus-Cheek is a significant blow for a Chelsea side that will attempt to win its second Europa League title when it faces Arsenal in Baku on May 29.

England manager Gareth Southgate revealed Thursday that he had planned to include Loftus-Cheek in his squad for the Nations League finals in June.

"I went to bed last night and Ruben's in the squad and playing brilliantly," Southgate said, according to BBC Sport.

"He misses now a major European final and a brilliant opportunity for us."

Loftus-Cheek appeared in 24 Premier League matches - 18 of which were as a substitute - and scored six goals while providing two assists. He also added four tallies and three helpers during Chelsea's Europa League campaign.

The news comes less than a month after Callum Hudson-Odoi suffered the same injury during a Premier League match against Burnley.
