Liverpool looked destined to cede control in the title race to Manchester City on Sunday before Toby Alderweireld stepped in and offered a helping hand.

A 90th-minute own goal from the Tottenham defender gave Jurgen Klopp's side a critical 2-1 victory over Spurs, just when it looked as though the club's hopes of capturing the Premier League crown were slipping away.

The result sees the Reds move two points up on their title rivals, though with one more match played.

Klopp pumped his fists wildly as the final whistle was blown, seemingly exuding a combination of excitement and relief after Liverpool escaped with three points.

"We can play better football but in the first half we had a lot of good moments," the bench boss said. "In the second not that many but we scored - 2-1, brilliant!"

"I said there are 500 ways to win a football game and today was slightly ugly. Who cares? I am really happy we don't have any breaks now. We compete with the best team in world for one position and that is really hard."

An early goal from Roberto Firmino was canceled out by Lucas Moura's 70th-minute strike from close range, and as the seconds ticked away at Anfield, Liverpool pressed for a late winner, leaving themselves open on the counter.

Moussa Sissoko spurned a brilliant two-on-one opportunity in the dying minutes, and his profligacy came back to bite Spurs not long after. Mohamed Salah got onto the end of a lofted ball into the area, and his relatively meek header was spilled by Hugo Lloris before ricocheting off Alderweireld and creeping over the line.

Pandemonium for Liverpool, disappointment for Spurs and Manchester City, and joy for neutral fans everywhere who want the Premier League title race to go right down to the wire.
