The Reds will be without Joe Gomez for over a month after the English defender suffered a leg injury in Liverpool's 3-1 win over Burnley on Wednesday.

The team confirmed Thursday that Gomez sustained a fracture in his lower left leg that could require him to miss up to six weeks.

The 21-year-old was forced off the pitch on a stretcher after just 23 minutes following a heavy challenge from Burnley defender Phil Bardsley.

A statement on Liverpool's website read: "Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though this is dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress."

Losing Gomez is a massive blow for manager Jurgen Klopp considering he's been a staple in Liverpool's back line this season, helping the team limit opponents to a Premier League-best six goals against.

Joel Matip could see an increase in opportunities until Gomez is able to return.

News of the injury comes just as Liverpool prepares for a difficult run of matches, as Klopp's men get set for a critical Champions League encounter with Napoli next week before taking on Manchester United, Wolverhampton, Newcastle United, and Arsenal to close out 2018. The Reds will then face league leaders Manchester City in their first match of 2019.

Liverpool currently sit two points back of City in second place in the Premier League table with 39 points through 15 matches.
