Heiko Herrlich will miss his first match in charge of Augsburg after breaking quarantine to buy toothpaste and skin cream.

The head coach flouted the Bundesliga's tight coronavirus restrictions when he went shopping in his team tracksuit ahead of Saturday's resumption of the 2019-20 campaign. As a result, Herrlich won't be allowed to oversee this weekend's visit from Wolfsburg.

"I made a mistake by leaving the hotel," Herrlich admitted in a statement, per translation from BBC Sport.

"Even though I have followed all hygiene measures both when leaving the hotel and otherwise, I cannot undo this," he continued. "In this situation, I was not able to act as a role model for my team and the public.

"I will therefore be consistent and stand by my mistake. Because of this misconduct, I will not be leading the training (on Friday) and will not be in charge of the team against Wolfsburg on Saturday."

Herrlich won't be forced into two weeks of isolation following his error. Instead, the tactician will be allowed to resume his duties once he receives two negative test results.

He'll also presumably return to the training pitch with fresh breath and silky smooth skin.

Augsburg, who are positioned 14th in the Bundesliga table, appointed Herrlich as their new head coach on March 10. Germany's top flight was suspended three days later.
