Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revealed that defender Joe Gomez may require an operation to repair a fracture in his lower left leg.

"I don't know. We will see. It is possible, probably," Klopp said when asked whether Gomez needs to undergo surgery.

"It is not exactly going how we want, that's how it is. He needs more time. We will see exactly how we do it.

"There were different moments when we thought we could do this or that. It will take time. We cannot say more."

Gomez was initially expected to be sidelined for six weeks after suffering the injury in early December during Liverpool's win over Burnley.

But now, 10 weeks on, it appears the 21-year-old will be out of the squad for an extended period.

A decision regarding an operation is expected to be made after Gomez visits a specialist, according to Andy Hunter of the Guardian.

Klopp ruled out Gomez from Liverpool's Champions League round-of-16 encounter against Bayern Munich on Feb. 19. It's unknown whether the youngster, who was forced to miss last season's Champions League final and the World Cup after undergoing an operation on his ankle, will be fit for the second leg in Germany on March 13.

After an impressive start to the season as one of Liverpool's most reliable defenders, Gomez was rewarded with a new long-term contract until 2024 just days after suffering the injury.
