Roger Federer will skip next month's Coupe Rogers in Montreal, he told reporters following his five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the men's Wimbledon final Sunday.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion made the decision with his camp prior to his run to the championship match at the All England Club.

"Looking ahead, we had decided in the team that I was going to skip Montreal anyway already a week ago, and just give myself enough time - I wish I had more, but I don't," Federer said. "So I'm just going to take enough time off, what I can, and then prepare for Cincinnati and get going from then on again."

Coupe Rogers is an ATP Masters 1000 event - the third-highest tier next to the four Grand Slams and the ATP Finals - and goes from Aug. 3-11.

Montreal's Coupe Rogers and Cincinnati's Western & Southern Open are back-to-back on the summer hard-court schedule. They're the only Masters 1000 events between Wimbledon and the US Open - which is the final Grand Slam of the season.

Federer is a two-time winner of the annual Canadian stop but has only made two appearances over the past seven years.
