Get down the hill fast, but be sure to go through the gates, which are spaced closer together than in Super G, but farther apart than in Slalom. Along with Slalom, Giant Slalom is considered one of the technical disciplines of Alpine Skiing, as opposed to Downhill or Super G, which are considered speed disciplines.

Most Likely Podium (Men)

  1. Ted Ligety (United States): The face of the U.S. Ski Team, Ligety won  three gold medals at the 2013 World Championships, including a win in giant slalom. He also finished first in World Cup standings for the event last season.

  2. Marcel Hirscher (Austria): The 2013 Slalom World Champion is almost as gifted at Giant Slalom. Only Ligety stands in Hirscher’s way to the top of the podium.

  3. Alexis Pinturault (France): Despite finishing atop the World Cup Standings in Super Combined, Pinturault has more podium finishes in Giant Slalom than any other event.

Most Likely Podium (Women)

  1. Tina Maze (Slovenia): After winning second prize at both the 2013 World Championships and the 2010 Olympics in Giant Slalom, Maze will have her sights set on a gold medal in this event at Sochi.

  2. Viktoria Rebensburg (Germany): It won’t be easy to knock the gold medalist four years ago off the podium. Rebensburg ranked atop the Giant Slalom World Cup Standings in both 2011 and 2012.

  3. Lara Gut (Switzerland): The silver medalist at the 2013 World Championships in Super G, Gut has already collected four first-place finishes in the 2014 season, including a win in the Giant Slalom in Austria.
