Maradona: Napoli deserves Italian title over 'extremely lucky' Juventus

With Napoli's 1-0 defeat against Roma, Juventus retained a record-matching fifth consecutive Scudetto, which Argentine icon Diego Maradona believes came as the result of some mighty good fortune.

The Naples legend said the Bianconeri had the benefit of match officials' favour helping their cause en route to claiming yet another Italian crown.

"I have to say, in all honesty, Juve was extremely lucky," Maradona told Piuenne TV, as quoted by FourFourTwo. "Even when I was playing they'd have two shots on target and score four goals. I'm not whining, I'm just saying the truth which all of Italy knows. Something is not right with the officials.

"The real difference is on the bench. (Napoli coach) Maurizio Sarri looked at the bench and did not have as many alternatives as (Juventus manager Massimiliano) Allegri. Napoli had a truly great campaign and played much better football than Juve."

Juventus recorded 24 wins in its last 25 games, and didn't necessarily need the referees to do so. The club sits sixth in penalties awarded this season, with only seven spot-kicks earned.

On the other hand, Juventus conceded three penalties all year, which is good for fourth fewest in the 2015-16 campaign. This is the reason Maradona thinks Napoli was more deserving and enjoyed a "truly great campaign and played much better football than Juve."

He added: "When Napoli needed to buy, they didn't do it. The fans know this ... I just want what is best for Napoli. This year, the fans wanted and deserved more."
