Poulter, Casey lead as final round of Honda Classic suspended due to darkness

Palm Beach Gardens, FL - Ian Poulter and Paul Casey shared a 1-shot lead in the final round at the Honda Classic on Sunday when play was suspended due to darkness.

After third-round play was suspended on Saturday due to heavy rain and wind, play continued on Sunday and the third round was concluded before players teed off for their final rounds. Play will continue Monday at 8 a.m. ET.

Poulter, who held a 3-shot lead at the end of round three after a 4-under 66, is 2-over through seven holes of his last round, while Casey is 4-under through nine after carding a 2-under 68 in his third round. The duo is tied for the lead at 7-under.

Poulter has two career victories on the PGA Tour, with his last win coming in 2012. Casey has one career win on tour at the 2009 Houston Open. Poulter has won 12 times on the European Tour, while Casey has is a 13-time winner.

Patrick Reed, who came back to snag the outright lead during his final round, made a bogey on his final hole of the day at seven and he is alone in third at 6-under. Reed fired an even-par 70 in his third round on the Champion Course at PGA National Resort & Spa.

Phil Mickelson, Daniel Berger, Jeff Overton, Brendan Steele and Russell Knox are all three shots back at minus-4 in the middle of their rounds, while 36- hole leader Padraig Harrington is 3-over through seven holes and he is alone in ninth at 3-under.

Poulter used his four-birdie and bogey-free third round to grab a 3-shot lead before teeing off for the final round at 4:30 p.m. ET.

"Every hole is important. As far as we get, I don't know how far we're going to get," Poulter said about teeing off for his final round late in the afternoon. "Every hole today was crucial. Every hole that we are going to go and play right now will be as well."

Reed entered the final round three shots back of Poulter along with Harrington. Reed carded three birdies and three bogeys in his third round.

Casey, who was six shots behind Poulter to start the final round, shot up the leaderboard early, making three birdies in his first four holes at one, two and four. Those gains vaulted Casey into a tie for third with Reed and Harrington at minus-6.

While a bogey on four and a double-bogey on six dropped Harrington well off the pace, Casey and Reed stuck around.

Poulter and Reed, both playing in the final pairing, held steady with four straight pars from No. 1 before a big swing happened on the par-3 fifth. Poulter shanked his tee shot way right and into the water, leading to a double-bogey and dropping him back to minus-7.

Right after that Reed poured in a 34-foot birdie putt from off the green and just like that he was tied for the lead with Poulter. The double-bogey by Poulter broke a string of 25 straight holes without a dropped shot.

On the next hole, Poulter's tee shot on six hooked left and found the water again, leading to a bogey. A par from Reed gave him the outright lead.

After four straight pars from No. 5, Casey, who made four birdies and two bogeys in his third round, stuck his approach to within six feet on No. 9. He kicked that in to grab a share of the lead with Reed.

Poulter got back on track on the par-3 seventh when his tee shot came to rest three feet from the hole. He knocked that in and watched Reed struggle on his way to a bogey on the same hole. That got Poulter back into a share of the lead, this time with Casey, while Reed fell back one shot. The horn blew shortly after, suspending play for the day.

"I feel like when I was playing some great golf in (2009-10), it feels like that kind of stuff," Casey said. "I think a combination of being extremely happy off the course and confidence on the course, I think I'm playing as good of golf if not better than I've played in the past."

NOTES: The Honda Classic last had a Monday finish back in 2007 ... This was the first time Poulter started the final round of a PGA Tour event with the lead ... Poulter has never won a stroke-play event on tour. Both of his wins were at WGC match-play events ... Poulter and John Huh (68) were the only players to go bogey-free in their third rounds ... Casey lost in a playoff last week to James Hahn at the Northern Trust Open ... Reed is seeking his fifth career win on tour, with his fourth coming at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions on Jan. 12 ... All 71 players have yet to complete their final rounds. The closest group to finishing is through 16 holes with the pairing of Poulter, Reed and Harrington were the last group off the first tee and they are through seven.
