3 takeaways from Thursday at PGA National

Cody Gribble and Wesley Bryan share the opening-round lead at the Honda Classic, each posting 6-under rounds of 64.

In all, 62 players were in red numbers by the end of the first round. Here are three takeaways heading into Friday.

Golf is a game of confidence

When you're hot, like Wesley Bryan has been lately, you're hot. However, there's another end to the spectrum, and when players lack confidence, it can be an uphill battle. Matt Every hasn't made a cut this year, and the two-time Arnold Palmer champion posted a 14-over 84 Thursday at PGA National. Every made seven bogeys, two double-bogeys, and a triple-bogey during his round.

It's all about the green stuff

After a month putting on Poa annua greens, the players are back on Bermuda grass and happy to have the smoother surface under their feet. "It was nice to get back on the East Coast, on some Bermuda greens," first-round co-leader Bryan told the Golf Channel.

No. 17 is a beast

The final hole of "The Bear Trap" was brutal Thursday.
