The PGA Tour has cancelled The Greenbrier Classic, which was scheduled for July 7-10, due to the record flooding that's devastated West Virginia.

“We are heartbroken by the devastation that the residents of West Virginia are experiencing at this time and the reports of lives lost due to the terrible flooding,” said PGA commissioner Tim Finchem.

“Cancelling The Greenbrier Classic is certainly the most prudent course of action as our foremost concern is the well-being of those who are having to live through this tragic situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

At least 23 people have died - including 15 from Greenbrier County - and thousands remain without power after more than 10 inches of rain fell in some portions of the state, according to Joe Sterling, Farida Fawzy, and Jareen Imam from CNN.

Bubba Watson captured video of The Greenbrier on Thursday that showed the course completely covered by the flooding:

The Greenbrier Classic becomes the third PGA event to have been cancelled due to weather conditions in the last 20 years. The 1996 AT&T Pebble Back Pro-Am and the 2009 Sanderson Farms Classic were both wiped out because of weather, while other tournaments were cancelled in 2001 after the terrorist attacks of September 11.
