Stars' Spezza records hat trick, denies Oilers 1st win

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

The new-look Edmonton Oilers won't be built in a day.

It seemed like much hasn't changed Tuesday in Dallas, where the hometown Stars fired 52 shots on goal and prevailed 4-2 thanks to a Jason Spezza hat trick.

The game was tied at two apiece with less than five minutes remaining in the third period when Nail Yakupov appeared to have the game on his stick with a breakaway opportunity.

The puck, however, was turned away by Kari Lehtonen, setting up Spezza's second goal of the night off a nice drop pass from Antoine Roussel in transition.

Spezza added an empty-net goal to complete the trifecta.

Despite the late decision, Dallas held the possession advantage throughout the contest, recording 39 more shot attempts than the Oilers.

Anders Nilsson made 37 saves in the loss, and Connor McDavid hit the score sheet, giving Edmonton a glimpse of what he can be.

In the meantime, however, the Oilers remain a work in progress.
