Report: Ex-NHLer Sean Avery arrested on misdemeanor drug charges

Marc DesRosiers-US PRESSWIRE

Former NHLer Sean Avery was arrested in Southampton, N.Y., last week according to police, report The Southampton Press and the New York Post.

Avery was arrested on Sept. 30 and faces three misdemeanor charges: A fourth-degree criminal mischief charge, and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The 35-year-old reportedly possessed acetaminophen with oxycodone, and Roxicodone at the time of his booking. His criminal mischief charge was reportedly related to him throwing objects at passing vehicles at an unspecified location in Southampton on Sept. 29.

Avery took to Twitter after reports of his arrest surfaced:

"Mr. Avery has prescriptions for the medications that were the basis of this charge," Avery's lawyer Edward Burke Jr. said, according to the New York Post.

Avery, who played 580 games over his 10-year career, retired in 2012. He was released on $500 bail and is set to appear in court on an unspecified date.
