Islanders claim goalie Berube off waivers from Kings

The New York Islanders have claimed goaltender Jean-Francois Berube off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings.

Berube has spent the last three seasons with the Kings' former AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. He went 37-9-4 with a 2.18 GAA and .913 save percentage in 52 games last season.

The move is a pre-emptive strike in case Islanders starter Jaroslav Halak is unable to play in the season opener, according to Newsday's Arthur Staple.

Halak reportedly practiced Tuesday. He has been dealing with an upper-body injury in training camp.
