Another member of the Lamoriello family has left the New Jersey Devils.

Senior vice president of hockey operations Chris Lamoriello is no longer with the organization, general manager Ray Shero told Tom Gulitti of The Record on Friday.

Shero said the hiring of assistant GM Tom Fitzgerald affected Lamoriello's responsibilities going forward.

"I brought in Tom as assistant general manager, so some of the duties for Chris would be changing," Shero said. "We both spent a lot of time on this, me and Chris, and after we both talked a lot and gave a lot of consideration to it, this is probably the best move for him at this point to take a step back and go from there."

In addition to his hockey operations role, the younger Lamoriello was GM of the AHL's Albany Devils, a responsibility Shero promised to Fitzgerald when he was hired on July 24.

The plan was originally for Chris Lamoriello to stay with the organization in an altered role, but that changed after he spoke with Shero.

"There were going to be some changes in his responsibilities and after spending a lot of time on this both of us thought at this point it was best for him to take a step back," Shero said.

Chris Lamoriello was a member of the NHL club's scouting staff for 19 seasons, and served as Albany's GM for 14 years.

His father, Lou, left the Devils to become GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs in July after 28 years in New Jersey. The elder Lamoriello was the Devils' first GM, taking over in 1987 and serving until May, when he shifted to the president's role exclusively upon Shero's hiring.

It does not appear as though the younger Lamoriello will join his father with the Maple Leafs, according to Gulitti.
