The San Jose Sharks will honor original owner George Gund III with a special banner raising ceremony next season.

A banner commemorating the late owner, who helped bring hockey to San Jose, will take place on Oct. 10 before a home game against the Anaheim Ducks, the team announced Tuesday.

"George Gund’s love of the game of hockey, and his belief in the city of San Jose and our fans are the reasons we are all here today," Sharks Majority Owner Hasso Plattner said in a release. "His legacy deserves to be honored and remembered forever. This banner will serve to remind everyone of his impact on the game of hockey and the Sharks franchise."

After relinquishing his ownership stake in the Minnesota North Stars organization, with his brother Gordon in 1990, Gund was given the rights to an expansion franchise which he moved to San Jose. The team played their first game on Oct. 4, 1991.

Gund received the Lester Patrick Award for Outstanding service to hockey in the United States in 1996 and was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. Sadly, he passed away on Jan. 15, 2013 at the age of 75.
