Washington Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik underwent wrist surgery Tuesday, and he's expected to be ready for the regular-season opener.

Orpik will resume working out in about two weeks. The club anticipates the veteran blue-liner will be able to get back to hockey activities in time for the Oct. 10 game against the New Jersey Devils.

Orpik tallied 19 assists in his first season with the Capitals, appearing in 78 games. He spent parts of 11 campaigns with the Pittsburgh Penguins after the club drafted him 18th overall in 2000.
