Fans got their first glimpse of Connor McDavid in full Edmonton Oilers gear Friday as the No. 1 overall pick took the ice at the team's orientation camp at Rexall Place.

About 3,000 supporters turned out to watch the skate. Fans cheered and chanted McDavid's name when he appeared.

“That was awesome,” McDavid said. “I didn’t really know what to expect. It’s a Friday and we’re just doing a normal practice, we weren’t doing anything too special. It’s awesome that they came out to support and that was really fun to see that.”

He went through a few on-ice drills with other Oilers prospects including Leon Draisaitl and Darnell Nurse.

“It was pretty funny skating them around and shooting them into the open net and they were celebrating," McDavid added. "It’s funny but at the end of the day it truly means a lot the support that they’ve shown.”

The Oilers signed the 18-year-old to a three-year entry-level contract prior to Friday's skate.
