The Detroit Red Wings are counting on Johan Franzen.

Ken Holland said Thursday that the veteran Swede has been working out on a daily basis and that the expectation inside the organization is that Franzen will resume his playing career next season, reports MLive's Ansar Khan.

Franzen's season ended Jan. 6 when he suffered a concussion on a hit from Edmonton Oilers forward Rob Klinkhammer. He battled setbacks in his attempt to return, but still couldn't shake the post-concussion symptoms into postseason competition.

He's experienced numerous head injuries in his 10-year career and the latest setback, he admitted, was affecting his home life.

Franzen will take up a shade under $4 million on the salary cap for the next five seasons.
