Report: Sharks on verge of naming Peter DeBoer head coach

Ed Mulholland / USA TODAY Sports

The San Jose Sharks are expected to announce the hiring of Peter DeBoer as their next head coach, reports ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

The pact is believed to be a four-year term, added TSN's Darren Dreger.

DeBoer had been linked to a handful of coaching vacancies since being fired by the New Jersey Devils last Boxing Day, with the Sharks emerging as the team with the most interest.

He led the Devils to the Stanley Cup Final in his first season with the club, but missed the playoffs in the following two seasons before embarking on a rocky start to the 2014-15 campaign.

Sharks general manager Doug Wilson, who declined comment on LeBrun's report, fired Todd McLellan after the team failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time in seven years.

Update: The Sharks have called a press conference for Thursday afternoon.
