Agent: Penguins, Greiss haven't 'closed the door but we’re not actively negotiating'
Pittsburgh Penguins backup goaltender Thomas Greiss could explore free agency for the second consecutive year, but his agent says the club hasn't ruled out bringing him back.
“We’ve spoken and neither side has closed the door but we’re not actively negotiating at this time either,” agent Ray Petkau told Pro Hockey Talk's Mike Halford in an e-mail Monday. “We’ll speak again before July 1st.”
Greiss went 9-6-3 with a 2.59 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage in 20 games in relief of Marc-Andre Fleury. The backup played only two games in December after testing positive for the mumps virus.
He played one game in April, allowing four goals in a 4-1 loss to the Philadephia Flyers.
Fleury went 34-20-9 with a .920 GAA and 2.32 save percentage in 64 appearances after signing a four-year contract extension in November.
Greiss tested free agency last summer before signing a one-year, $1-million deal.
