OHL's Erie Otters owe Panthers' Boyes $300K in bankruptcy case
The Erie Otters owe Brad Boyes a lot for the team's success in the early 2000s, but even more in owed funds.
As financial turmoil surrounds the junior franchise, the team and owner Sherry Bassin owe the Florida Panthers forward nearly $300,000 for a loan he made to his former team.
Boyes played junior in Erie between 1998 and 2002, twice being named the league's most outstanding player and helping the Otters claim the OHL championship in 2002. So after he made it to the big leagues, he decided to pay it back to the team that helped him reach the NHL.
Six years ago, Boyes lent the team $296,688 dollars, documenting the transaction as a trade debt after the team came into financial troubles.
The team also took on loans from the Edmonton Oilers, which have been thoroughly documented, and now the OHL club will be sold in a U.S. bankruptcy court auction in late June.
This auction will hopefully see the team given the money to be able to pay the nearly $5.4 million owed to the Oilers, the $300,000 owed to Boyes, and another nearly $300,000 in two other loans.
Fortunately for Boyles, his 10 years in the NHL probably means his bank account isn't hurting too much.
