Penguins GM Rutherford pursuing 1st-round draft pick

The Pittsburgh Penguins are making an attempt to pluck a prospect out of the first round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

After dealing his own selection - which turned out to be the 16th pick after an early playoff exit - to the Edmonton Oilers, Pens general manager Jim Rutherford is targeting teams with multiple first-round picks in the hopes of adding depth and talent to the Penguins' prospect pool.

"I’ll certainly pursue it," Rutherford told Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I don’t know if we’ll be able to pick up one or not (but) there are some teams that have acquired an abundance of first-round picks, and they may not need them all.

"I’ve actually talked to a couple of those teams already," he added.

Rutherford may be extra motivated to add a pick considering the Penguins are set to make only one selection in the first four rounds as a result of previous trades.

Teams with multiple first-round picks include the Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, and Winnipeg Jets.
