Gary Bettman would like to see the Ottawa Senators in, well, Ottawa.

The NHL commissioner spoke in support of owner Eugene Melnyk's plan to build the team a new arena along the Ottawa River at the Lebreton Flats.

This, after arriving late to Sunday's Game 6 when he was caught in traffic.

"I know that Eugene has focused very much on the future and the stability of this club in Ottawa," Bettman told reporters. "I know that he feels it would be great for the community and great for the franchise to have a new building and have it downtown so we're watching closely.

"The plans, if they come to fruition, and we hope they do, are an exciting opportunity for the team and for greater Ottawa."

Those plans remain in the preliminary stages. Melnyk offered a submission to the National Capital Commission concerning the land redevelopment in December.
