Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Kimmo Timonen has announced this current NHL season will be his last.

The 39-year-old told reporters Thursday that he won't return to the league next fall.

The former Philadelphia Flyers blue-liner missed most of the campaign with blood clots in his leg and lungs before being traded to Chicago for a pair of draft picks last week.

Timonen made his season debut Monday in a 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

He has 117 goals and 454 assists in 1,093 regular-season games over 16 NHL seasons.
