Report: Senators contacted Maple Leafs about acquiring Clarkson
The Columbus Blue Jackets were reportedly not the only team that reached out to the Toronto Maple Leafs about a trade for David Clarkson.
The Ottawa Senators had discussions with the Leafs about adding the forward, reports ESPN's Pierre LeBrun:
Sources tell ESPN.com that the Ottawa Senators had a few conversations with the Toronto Maple Leafs about a Clarkson trade, the idea behind it that perhaps the right winger could rediscover himself in Canada's capital away from Toronto.
Clarkson was acquired by the Blue Jackets on Thursday for injured forward Nathan Horton.
The Senators were ultimately scared off by Clarkson's contract, according to LeBrun.
The veteran winger has an annual cap hit of $5.25 million until 2019-20. He is earning $4.75 in base salary this season.
Clarkson scored 15 goals, added 11 assists and racked up 185 penalty minutes in 118 games with the Maple Leafs over two seasons.
