Blues' Shattenkirk suffers lower-body injury in collision with Ovechkin

Jeff Curry / USA TODAY Sports

St. Louis Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk left Sunday's game against the Washington Capitals in the first period after colliding with Alex Ovechkin.

Shattenkirk got up slowly and left for the locker room.

He has a lower-body injury and will not return, the club announced in the first intermission.

Ovechkin appeared to catch Shattenkirk with an elbow to the head after the blue-liner prevented the Capitals star from earning a breakaway.

That the head is located in the upper region of the body, the team`s classification of the injury as 'lower body' is puzzling.

Head coach Ken Hitchcock said there would be no update on Shattenkirk or forward David Backes until Monday.
