Patrik Elias assisted on his team's lone goal in regulation, then provided the game-winner in the shootout as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The Devils won their second straight game and handed the Maple Leafs their seventh consecutive loss.

Niether team scored until Maple Leafs winger James van Riemsdyk's backhander beat Cory Schneider midway through the third period.

Devils defenseman Adam Larsson answered with a snap shot that tied the game with 2:50 remaining.

Overtime settled nothing, then Devils center Jacob Josefson and Elias tallied in the shootout to earn the victory.

The Leafs return home to face the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday, while the Devils face the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.
