Martin Brodeur to announce retirement Thursday, join Blues front office

Jasen Vinlove / USA Today

Martin Brodeur's brief stint in the St. Louis Blues net will translate into a front office job.

After taking a leave of absence to consider his future in the game, Brodeur will announce his retirement and take up an executive post with the club, as first reported by Chris Johnston of Sportsnet.

The Blues confirmed the news, adding Brodeur will remain with the club in a management role in hockey operations.

The press conference is set for Thursday morning.

Brodeur will retire as the NHL's all-time leader in games played (1,266), wins (691) and shutouts (125). He spent the bulk of his career with the New Jersey Devils, with whom he won three Stanley Cups, the Calder Trophy and four Vezina Trophies.

He joined the Blues back in November after Brian Elliott fell to injury, posting a record of 3-3-0 with a .899 save percentage.

The legendary goaltender, however, is expected to re-join the Devils in some capacity in the future, according to general manager Lou Lamoriello.

"(Brodeur) could have come here if he wanted," Lamoriello told Rich Chere of the Star-Ledger. "I don't think this is a case of him choosing (between the two clubs). He's been there with the players. The (Blues) players and administration asked him to stay. He had an impact in that dressing room.

"He's going to be travelling with the team and staying with the team. It keeps him as close to playing for the rest of this year as he can get. He's doing this because he made that commitment there this year. There is no disrespect (to the Devils) whatsoever... (but) he'll be back with the Devils."
