VIDEOS: Canadiens' Emelin hits Gionta high, Sabres score winner on power play

Kevin Hoffman / USA Today

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin may have given the Buffalo Sabres a win Friday by hitting former teammate Brian Gionta high late in the third period.

Gionta rotated his body to dump the puck into Montreal's zone as he crossed center ice and Emelin delivered a forearm to his helmet, causing a scrum in front of the penalty boxes. Emelin received a minor penalty on the play.

The Sabres had the last laugh, scoring a fortuitous goal on the ensuing power play. A dump-in by Tyler Ennis hit a stanchion and bounced into the slot, leaving Canadiens netminder Carey Price helpless behind the net as Matt Moulson put the Sabres in front.

Even if Emelin doesn't receive supplemental discipline, his hit was very costly for Montreal.
