Report: NHL reached out to Scott Stevens regarding Player Safety position

James Guillory / USA TODAY Sports

The NHL appears to have targeted another heavy hitter for a position with the Department of Player Safety.

As if the hiring of Chris Pronger wasn't enough, the league has reached out to former New Jersey Devils defenseman Scott Stevens about a job as part of Stephane Quintal's disciplinary team, according Bob McKenzie of TSN.

"The National Hockey League is looking for really bright, cerebral guys that also played the game at that level and with that sort of fury, (so) they would know what an infraction is, what a suspension is, and when somebody's trying to pull a fast one on them," McKenzie reported.

"So right now, (Stevens) is a candidate to join the player safety department."

Stevens, of course, was known for his brutal and bruising physical game, and effectively ended the career of Eric Lindros with a massive, open ice hit that would certainly warrant negative attention in today's game.

As such, it sounds like he's a perfect fit, if the league is indeed looking for former players likely to be suspended in 2014.
