Avs' Mackinnon still looking for 1st goal of season

Patrick Roy didn't see this one coming.

Heading into Colorado's game against the New York Islanders on Thursday, Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon - the NHL's reigning rookie of the year - has yet to score a goal this season, bewildering even his head coach.

"If you said to me after 10 games Nate would have zero goals, I would never believe that," Roy declared to NHL.com. "Unfortunately, it is what it is."

MacKinnon scored his first NHL goal in the fifth game of last season, finishing the year with 24.

But despite the slow start to 2014-15, the 19-year-old is maintaining a fairly mature approach.

"I'm not worried. I think I'm playing pretty solid," he said. "I had some chances last game ... Hopefully things change (Thursday). The worst thing I can do is worry every night. It's a long season and we have lots of games left. Hopefully when one comes the net gets a little bigger. I don't want to change my game. I'm feeling good."

MacKinnon ranks second on the team with 28 shots on goal, and has contributed four assists in the season's first 10 games.

Based on his supreme skill set, it's only a matter of time before he bulges the twine.
