Kings use emergency recall on farmhand Van der Gulik

Now that the Los Angeles Kings have played a game while down a man - which they did on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers - they're eligible to use an emergency recall on a player with a salary cap hit of under $650,000.

Though the Kings were reportedly hoping to use this recall on center Jordan Weal, that wasn't possible, as Jon Rosen of lakingsinsider.com explains:

The Kings were not able to use the emergency recall on center Jordan Weal, whose $610,000 cap hit would have been pushed above the maximum provided by Article 50.10 due to bonuses based on games played.

Instead, the team will be calling up left winger David Van der Gulik.

"(Van der Gulk was) signed in the offseason for this type of situation," explained Kings assistant general manager Rob Blake. "Depth player. Smart, reliable, has some NHL experience. Can (play) up and down the lineup. Versatile."

The Kings will now be able to ice a full roster on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. This recall would also appear to suggest that Anze Kopitar is likely to miss his second consecutive game.
