Hurricanes place Jordan Staal on injured reserve

The Carolina Hurricanes placed Jordan Staal on injured reserve as he continues to recover from surgery for a fractured fibula that should keep him out of the lineup until 2015.

The move is a formality since Staal was on track to miss months regardless of the surgery outcome. By placing him on injured reserve, Carolina will have room for an extra player on its 23-man roster once the season begins.
