The Ottawa Senators ended any speculation Bobby Ryan would test the free agent market next offseason by signing the winger to a seven-year contract extension worth $50.75 million.

The Senators announced the extension at a press conference on Thursday.

"He is truly the type of player we want to build our team around," Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said.

Ryan will be the highest-paid player on Ottawa next season, with a cap hit of $7.25 million.

"I want to say how thrilled we are to make a long-term commitment to the city of Ottawa," Ryan told reporters. "We feel like we have found the place we can start a family and call home. It was almost a (no-brainer) for us."

Ryan, 27, recorded 23 goals and 48 points in 70 games in his debut season with the Senators. He had four consecutive 30-goal seasons with the Anaheim Ducks and was runner-up for the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie in 2009.
