Flyers GM on Kimmo Timonen's availability this season: 'I really don't know'

The Philadelphia Flyers aren't quite sure whether they will have the services of defenseman Kimmo Timonen this season.

The 39-year-old, who signed a one-year, $2-million contract to remain with the team for at least one more season, was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs and lower right calf back in August, and may or may not be able to suit up for the Flyers during the regular season.

"I really don't know,” Flyers general manager Ron Hextall said Monday, via NJ.com. “He’s running through the process … getting to see the people that he needs to see. We have together as a group and discuss it ... It's just an ongoing evaluation, I guess, to try to figure out in the end what's right for Kimmo."

A recent report out of Timonen's native Finland suggested he may have to take blood thinners, a prescription that would effectively end his career.

Hextall tapped the brakes on that speculation, saying an update will be offered in the coming days.

“We have to be diligent and thorough here before we start announcing things that are half truths,” Hextall said. “We want to have all the information. I hope to have something this week, but no promises.”
