Report: Brendan Shanahan to be named Maple Leafs' new president

Joe Camporeale / USA TODAY Sports

Brendan Shanahan is set to resign his position as the NHL's director of player safety in order to accept an executive position with the Toronto Maple Leafs, as initially reported by Damien Cox of the Toronto Star; it was later confirmed by Bob McKenzie of TSN that Shanahan will indeed be named team president.

Cox cites "multiple sources" who believe the resignation will happen as soon as Friday, while a formal press conference announcing his position with Toronto's hockey club could take place on Monday.

While the exact job title has not been confirmed, sources suggest the NHL Hall of Fame inductee will likely be named president of the team, and not just president of hockey operations.

Shanahan scored 656 goals in the NHL and won three Stanley Cups as a player, but would bring no front office experience to the table.

It is also expected that Dave Nonis is expected to continue in his role as general manager of the team under Shanahan, as per Chris Johnston of Sportsnet.

The move will also signal a temporary shift in the NHL's department of player safwty.
