Toronto Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle was optimistic about the status of Phil Kessel's foot after the team's leading scorer underwent precautionary X-rays following Saturday's game.

Toronto hosts the Calgary Flames on Tuesday hoping to snap out of an eight-game losing skid that has knocked it out of the Eastern Conference playoff hunt.

The Maple Leafs are two losses shy of tying the franchise-record losing skid set between January 15-February 8, 1967.

Maple Leafs F Phil Kessel will play vs. Flames despite bruised foot

A bruised foot will not be enough to keep Phil Kessel from trying to halt the Toronto Maple Leafs' eight-game losing skid.

Kessel took a hard pass off his skate during Saturday's loss to the Detroit Red Wings, but X-rays after the game revealed no serious damage. He says he is ready to go Tuesday against the Calgary Flames.

"He says he's available to play," Maple Leafs coach Carlyle said Tuesday. "So basically it's been two days of treatment and he's telling us he's ready."

Kessel has not scored in three games and has been limited to four points on Toronto's losing streak.

Maple Leafs F Kessel has X-rays on foot after game vs. Red Wings

Things could be going from bad to worse for the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs.

Already mired in an eight-game losing skid, the Maple Leafs might be without their leading scorer to finish the season after Phil Kessel had X-rays on his foot following Saturday's loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

Kessel took a hard pass from teammate James van Riemsdyk off his right foot near the end of the second period and hobbled to the bench, but returned for the final 20 minutes of the contest.

Kessel leads the Maple Leafs with 36 goals and 77 points.
