Stars' Ruff: G Lehtonen likely concussed after collision with Wild F Haula

by Mar 8, 11:59 PM

Dallas Stars head coach Lindy Ruff updated the status of injured goaltender Kari Lehtonen after Saturday's 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild.

Tim Thomas stopped six shots while earning the win in relief, and is likely to get the lion's share of starts in Dallas if Lehtonen is out for an extended period of time.

Haula was assessed a game misconduct, and may be hearing from the NHL's Department of Player Safety in the coming days.

See below for footage of the incident.

Stars G Lehtonen skates for first time since concussion; 'close to return'

by Mar 13, 12:33 PM

Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen is making progress in his attempt to return from the concussion he suffered last week when he was involved in a vicious collision with Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula.

It would seem to be just an effort by Lehtonen to stay conditioned while he awaits clearance for practice from the team doctors, which Stepneski notes should come soon.

The Stars are yet to provide a timetable for the Finnish netminder's return.

Lehtonen listed as day-to-day, Stars call up Nilstorp from AHL

by Mar 9, 8:14 PM

With goaltender Kari Lehtonen being listed as day-to-day with a head injury, the Dallas Stars have called up goaltender Cristopher Nilstorp from the Texas Stars of the AHL to back-up newly acquired puck-stopper (and noted ugly mask wearer) Tim Thomas.

The extent of Lehtonen's injury is unknown at this point, but head coach Lindy Ruff is confident that Thomas can fill in admirably in his absence.

"He’s not your conventional type of goaltender, but we knew that going in,” Ruff told the Stars official website. “He’s a battler, he’s athletic. I think in Tim’s case he has been in the fire before and he knows how to handle it. We’re hopeful that experience can help us.”

Thomas earned his first victory as a member of the Stars Saturday night, making six saves in relief after Lehtonen left the game following a collision with Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula that knocked off his mask and drove his head into the crossbar.

Lindy Ruff: Lehtonen 'not doing well' after collision with Haula

by Mar 9, 2:16 PM

The hope was Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen would be able to play in a couple days after recovering from a collision Saturday night against the Minnesota Wild.

But Stars head coach Lindy Ruff told reporters Sunday that Lehtonen was not doing well.

Lindy Ruff on Haula hit on Lehtonen: 'He should be suspended'

by Mar 9, 8:28 AM

Dallas Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen was the victim of an unavoidable play in his crease Saturday night. As Minnesota Wild forward Erik Haula came rushing in, he ran straight into Lehtonen.

Lehtonen's head went straight back into the crossbar and a large scrum ensued.

Stars head coach Lindy Ruff was not happy with the play and told reporters after the game he thinks Haula should be suspended.

"He hit the crossbar hard and all likelihood is, it’s a concussion on just a dirt play.  He should be suspended.  A fourth-liner kicks out our goaltender."

Wild head coach Mike Yeo didn't feel the same (to no surprise) and stood up for Haula.

"I’m not saying that we want our players to do that and I feel bad for the goalie, he got hurt and everything. But if you watch the replay, Haula is trying to make a play to score a goal. He gets tripped up a little bit and there is really nowhere for him to go. So I would say it’s incidental, but what can you do."

Lehtonen was bleeding and received treatment on the ice prior to heading to the locker room, according to Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News.

Haula was assessed a major penalty for charging as well as a game misconduct.

Tim Thomas was called upon to make his Stars debut in Lehtonen's absence.
