Martin Brodeur's 'heart' wants to return next season, admits he may have to play elsewhere

The future of New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has never been more uncertain.

In conversation with reporters Sunday in Toronto, Brodeur revealed that his heart is set on returning next season, should the body be willing. However, if the future Hall of Famer signs on for a 22nd NHL season, the 41-year-old admits he may have to wear a new jersey for the first time in his career.

"I’m done after this year with my contract. Depending on what’s going to happen in the next few months, if I feel my body’s (willing), I’ll see what’s best scenario for me if it’s back in New Jersey or somewhere else," Brodeur explained via Tom Gulitti of the Bergen County Record. "That’s something the future will bring.

"But right now my heart is here to try to finish strong and prove that I can still be a big impact in hockey games.”

In 25 games in a backup role this season, Brodeur has compiled a 12-9-4 record, 2.39 GAA, and .902 Sv%.
