Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky was activated from injured reserve Thursday, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reports.

Though Bobrovsky manned the starter's net during morning skate, he will indeed serve as the backup goalie Thursday against Phoenix. It's uncertain how long he'll remain in that role, but Bobrovsky should have little trouble regaining his starting job once completely recovered.

Bobrovsky placed on injured reserve, Blue Jackets confident in McElhinney

by Dec 5, 8:34 AM

The Columbus Blue Jackets placed Sergei Bobrovsky on injured reserve Wednesday, and the team's number one goalie is expected to be out a minimum of four to five weeks with a groin strain.

As such, Curtis McElhinney will now have an opportunity to prove his worth at the NHL level, and general manager Jarmo Kekalainen is confident that he can get the job done.

I don't really like the word 'backup' because he's a goalie that's capable of playing in the National Hockey League and that's why we gave him a one-way contract. He was consistently playing at a high level last year with Springfield, and that's the mindset you have: whatever happens, he's good enough to step in and take responsibility. In 49 starts for the AHL's Springfield Falcons last season, McElhinney posted a record of 29-16-3 with a .923 save percentage, a 2.32 goals against average and an astounding nine shutouts.

This season, McElhinney has a record of 1-3-1 with the Blue Jackets, with a save percentage of .925 and a 2.34 goals against average.
