Wild F Mikko Koivu hurt after blocking shot on Saturday

Jan 4, 11:33 PM

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu was hurt while blocking a Nicklas Backstrom shot during Minnesota's victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday night.

Koivu left the game for a short while before returning in the second period and promptly recording two power-play assists to key Minnesota's victory.

Despite Koivu's heroics on Saturday night, the Wild center may have sustained a serious foot injury. Wild head coach Mike Yeo didn't update Koivu's status post-game, but reportedly expressed concern over whether or not Koivu would be able to join the Wild on their upcoming two game road trip.

"I don't even need to go into what he means to our team," said the Wild bench boss.

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu will not play for Finland at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, according to Michael Russo of the Star Tribune.

The 30-year-old underwent surgery back on Jan. 6 to repair a broken ankle, with an expected recovery time on six-to-eight weeks. While he has been skating, Koivu has not been cleared to practice, but is expected to return to the Wild lineup after the Olympic break.

Mikko Koivu 'a long shot' to participate at Olympic Games

Feb 6, 5:49 PM

Minnesota Wild forward Mikko Koivu had surgery to repair his fractured ankle in early January in the hopes of accelerating the healing process and participating in the 2014 Winter Olympic games. The Wild captain, however, has not played since January 4th, and his continued absence from the lineup is giving Finland something to worry about.

TSN's Bob McKenzie joined TSN Radio 1050 on Thursday afternoon and mentioned Koivu's chances of playing for Team Finland are looking increasingly slim. "Mikko Koivu seems to be a long shot and hasn't skated or played for the Minnesota Wild for a month now. He's in tough shape to be cleared for the Finns."

Koivu has played in 44 games for the Wild scoring 35 points.

Mikko Koivu will not play Thursday, Olympic participation in doubt

Feb 5, 3:06 PM

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu has been ruled out of Thursday's game against the Nashville Predators, putting his availability for the Sochi Olympics in doubt.

"Mikko’s doing everything he can to come back,” general manager Chuck Fletcher told Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune on Wednesday. “It’s a six-to-eight-week injury that we’re trying to accelerate and have him come back in five, but not only is he not cleared to play right now, he’s not even cleared to practice with the team."

Fletcher added "he’s skating on his own, but it’s a long way from skating on your own to playing in a high-end international Olympic game."

Koivu hasn't played since Dec. 4 due to an ankle injury.

Wild head coach Yeo 'highly in doubt' over Koivu playing before Olympic break

Feb 3, 5:34 PM

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Mikko Koivu's return to the Minnesota Wild likely won't come until after the Olympics, leaving his availability for Finland during the Winter Games in question.

Koivu broke his right ankle Jan. 4 when he was hit by a puck and had surgery to accelerate the recovery.

The captain and first-line center has resumed skating, but Wild coach Mike Yeo told reporters after practice Monday that Koivu's availability for the last two games before the Olympics break was ''highly in doubt.'' Koivu could still play in the Winter Games, however, if he's cleared in time by the team's medical staff. Finland's opener is Feb. 13 against Austria.

The Wild host Tampa Bay Tuesday and Nashville Thursday before the NHL hiatus begins. The Wild's regular season schedule resumes Feb. 27.

Wild GM Fletcher says surgery leaves door open for Koivu to play in Olympics

Jan 6, 4:39 PM

Minnesota Wild forward Mikko Koivu fractured his ankle while blocking a shot and underwent successful surgery Monday. General manager Chuck Fletcher mentioned Monday that Koivu's recovery time was accelerated by a month by having the surgery.

With just over a month to go before the Olympic games in Sochi, Fletcher will let Koivu decide if he will play for Finland if his ankle is healed. The four-week timeline would mean Koivu could not suffer any setbacks if he wants to participate in Sochi.

Koivu would have to play February 6th against the Nashville Predators in order to go to the Olympics.
