Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said after the game that Malkin is dealing with a "lower-body injury" and will be tested tomorrow:

Whether he's limping or not, that Malkin is ambulatory is a very good sign after his awkward collision with the end boards on Saturday night.

Penguins' Malkin declares himself a game-time decision Friday

Jan 2, 1:10 PM

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin (leg) said he could be a game-time decision Friday against the Rangers, Shelly Anderson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Analysis:

Malkin recently suggested he'd be back early this week, but he sat Tuesday and was non-committal regarding his status for Friday. If he feels well enough after morning skate, he may get the green light, but the Pens have been on a roll of late and don't need to rush Malkin back.

Penguins place Malkin on IR with knee injury

Dec 29, 6:08 PM

After suffering a knee injury December 14th, the Pittsburgh Penguins officially placed center Evgeni Malkin on the injured reserve Sunday.

Malkin believed Saturday he was close to taking part in contact drills but clearly the Penguins are being cautious with their 2012 Art Ross and Hart Trophy winner. The 27-year-old underwent knee surgery in 2011 after tearing his ACL and MCL which sidelined him for 39 games.

The Penguins haven't stumbled in Malkin's absence having won five of their last six games and sit atop the Eastern Conference, which could be another reason why the Penguins are being patient.

Dec 28, 5:34 PM

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has dealt with knee injuries in the past and is no stranger to the recovery process. On Saturday after taking part in no-contact drills after team practice, Malkin told reporters he was getting closer.

"Maybe next practice. Not today. I think I’m ready for contact next practice. I’m not rushing it. We’ll see after (Sunday’s) game. It’s tough not playing. It’s hard skating after practice every day, but it’s life. It’s sports. Everyone has injuries. It’s just working hard and staying positive." Quote via Sam Kasan

Sports, injuries, life. So many feelings from Malkin.

Penguins F Evgeni Malkin leaves Saturday's game vs. Red Wings with apparent leg injury

Dec 14, 9:03 PM

In the third period of Saturday night's game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin - who plays the point on the power-play - was in a defensive rush situation. Malkin attempted to check Red Wings penalty-killer Luke Glendening, but got tied up with the Red Wings forward and fell awkwardly into the end boards.

Malkin remained prone on the ice for several minutes before being helped off of the ice by Penguins teammates and trainers. The high-scoring centerman appeared unable or unwilling to put any weight on his left leg.
